When played on the surface of a hockey rink, six players, including the goalie, compete against the opposing team's six players. Extra players are usually kept on each bench, outside the playing surface, and interchanged with the six on the floor either during play or at a stoppage of play. In co-ed leagues there must be a minimum of two people of the opposite sex on the same team. There must also be at least one person of the opposite sex on the playing surface at all times. There are no referees so all goals, penalties, offsides, etc. must be called by both teams honestly to create a fair play environment.
Equipment
All players must wear a CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved helmet, approved hockey gloves and running shoes. Players under the age of 18 are required to wear full facial protection as well.
Although not mandatory, it is recommended that players wear elbow pads, athletic cup, soft knee pads and shin guards. As well, adults should consider wearing facial protection to protect their eyes. Standard ice hockey sticks are used to play the game.
Goaltenders must wear full protection, including neck protected caged mask, chest protector, hockey pants, athletic cup and any trapper, blocker and pads combination.
Face offs
-ball is placed in face off circle, touch sticks 3 times (n-h-l) and battle for the ball.
-Face-offs are taken at center ice at the start of a period or after a goal.
-Face-offs are taken in the neutral zone if there is a stoppage in play in the neutral zone (eg. Ball out of play, penalty, offside)
-Face-offs are taken in the defensive zone of the team who stopped play in the attacking zone.
Penalties
This is strictly a no-contact league and all penalties are frowned upon
-Minor: 2:00 - tripping, hooking,
-Major: 4:00 - high sticking, any hitting with body eg. Body check, elbowing, any hitting with stick, Slashing
-Game Misconduct: intent to injure, fighting, unsportsmanlike misconduct
Icing
No-touch icing. Icing occurs when a team shoots the ball before the shooting player physically crosses the center line and the ball passes the opponent's goal line before any player, of either team, can touch it. A stoppage of play shall occur with the ensuing faceoff taking place in the end zone of the team that shot the ball.
Offside
When an offside occurs play is stopped. Before entering an opponent team's zone (the area from behind their net to their blue line) the ball must cross the blue line first before the player or any of his teammates.
Scoring
To score a legal goal, it cannot be kicked in; nor struck with a stick above the shoulders; nor pushed in using the hand, nor while offside.
Periods
Games will consist of three 15:00 running time periods. Games started more than 5 minutes late will result in a two minute minor penalty for delay of game to the team who is not ready to start.
Captains
Captains are responsible for providing 2 game balls for each game. Home team captains are responsible for working the game clock. Eg. Starting and reseting clock.
